Sonoma County Repertory Theater

Presents the first show of the 2010 season

I Hate Hamlet

By Paul Rudnick
Directed by Jennifer King, Associate Director

Sebastopol, CA – December 18, 2009 Sonoma County Repertory Theater’s 2010 season promises thrills, chills, and laugh-out-loud entertainment and I Hate Hamlet by Paul Rudnick, is no exception. Cast with many local favorites, this production will certainly be the best way to celebrate the New Year.

He has it all: a starring role in a television series, a beautiful girlfriend, a devoted agent, and most importantly, the chance to play Hamlet in Central Park! Or, does he? When everything goes awry, Andrew summons the ghost of John Barrymore and the fun begins! The laughs are nonstop as Andrew wrestles with his conscience, Barrymore, his sword, and the fact that he fails as Hamlet in this season-opening comedy.

Written in 1991, I Hate Hamlet premiered on Broadway with huge success. It was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor, a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress and won two Theatre World Awards. Its playwright, Paul Rudnick, was also nominated for a Drama Desk Award in 1993 for Outstanding New Play.

This production is directed by Associate Director Jennifer King, and stage managed by the Rep’s Production Manager April George. The cast includes: Allison Marcom, Peggy Van Patten, Emily Gomes, Benjamin Stowe (Director of Education), Scott D Phillips (Artistic Director) and Dan Saski (Associate Artist). The production team includes: David R. Wright (scenic designer) Skipper Skeoch (costume designer), Joe Winkler (sound designer) and April George (lighting designer).
I Hate Hamlet plays at Sonoma County Repertory Theater January 20 – February 21, 2010. Advance ticket sales are available by phone at (707) 823-0177 or on the web at www.the-rep.com. The box office is open Tuesday – Saturday, noon – 4PM. General admission tickets are available for $25, and $20 discounted tickets are available to seniors (60+) and students with a valid ID.

As a companion piece to I Hate Hamlet, the Rep will also be presenting Barrymore, a hilariously touching one-man show starring William Wilson. Barrymore depicts the life of John Barrymore a few months before his death in 1942. He reminisces about various instances in his life and about his career downslide due to alcoholism. It was first produced at the Stratford Festival in Canada, but soon after went to Broadway, where it won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play. Barrymore will open with a Sunday matinee, January 24 at 2PM and run Monday evenings, February 1, 8 and 15 at 7:30PM.
