Ken Sonkin, Associate Artist

Ken has been acting and directing for the past 25 years with such companies as American Conservatory Theater, Berkeley Rep, Sonoma County Repertory Theater, Center Rep, Marin Shakespeare Festival, Pacific Alliance Stage Company, The B Street Theatre, Pennsylvania Centre Stage and the Denver Center Theatre Company.  He holds a BFA in acting from Ohio State and is also a graduate of A.C.T.'s masters program.  

Around the country, Ken has directed productions of Summerland, Lil' Darlin', Sleuth, Flowers for Algernon, The Long Goodbye, Always... Patsy Cline, The Crucible, Lady House Blues, An Evening of William Saroyan, Little Shop of Horrors, A Southern Christmas (world premiere), Female Transport, ‘Art’, Moon Over Buffalo, The Baker’s Wife, On Golden Pond, Tape, The Foreigner, Golf With Alan Shepard and The Subject Was Roses.  For the Rep, Ken has directed Incorruptible and Twelfth Night, as well as student company productions of Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe, Goldberg Street and Tartuffe.  He is also a director for PlayGround at Berkeley Rep and The Playwrights' Lab at the Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley.  As an actor, some of his favorite roles include The EmCee in Cabaret, Tom, Phyllis, and Leslie in Sylvia,  Teach in American Buffalo, Algernon (et. al) in Bullshot Crummond, Max Love in Max & Maxie, Trinculo in The Tempest, The Ghost of Marley in A Christmas Carol, and Nicodemus/Lady Enid in The Mystery of Irma Vep.

He has taught acting at A.C.T., The National Theatre Conservatory, Northwestern University, Stanford University, Cornell College, Solano College’s Actor Training Program, The Pacific Actors’ Conservatory and currently is on the faculty at University of San Francisco.  He spent three years as the director/founder of The Theatre Artists Institute, the professional actor training program for The American Musical Theatre of San Jose and also served as the artistic director of The Regency Center in San Francisco.  He is a founding member of Alternative Theater Ensemble in San Rafael.

His television credits include Nash Bridges, Moonlighting, The Late Show, A&E's Comedy on the Road and numerous PBS programs, including being the host of Video Field Trips.  As a magician, Ken was voted #1 Street Performer in San Francisco, appeared in concert with Jay Leno, Red Skelton, Ellen De Generes, The Manhattan Transfer, was a regular entertainer in Las Vegas and at Hollywood's Magic Castle, and performed for Queen Elizabeth II of England.
